Division Board
The Division Board is keen to welcome new members. It especially seeks to recruit younger scientists ready to make their debut on the international stage; or individuals who are keen to organise an activity such as a workshop or specialist symposium, or to contribute to the EFB European Congresses of Biotechnology. The current membership, and their responsibilities, are listed below. The Division co-Chairs (Marjan de Mey and Neil Dixon) would be pleased to hear from others who are keen to become involved in helping with the organisation of Division activities..

The Division is governed by a Division Board, comprising:
- A chair and a secretary (or two co-chairs, each of whom also act as co-secretaries);
- A treasurer;
- An industrial liaison manager;
- and a number of other members without title.
In addition, there is a Division Advisory Board, the function of which is to offer advice and support to the members of the Division Board.
The Division Board will meet at least once a year.
The Division Board will be elected annually at the AGM. Nominations for members of the Division Board will be held 1 month before the AGM.
The Division will organise events such as meetings and conferences. The major features of these activities are:
- They are international in scope and focused specifically on Europe;
- They are interdisciplinary in nature, encompassing any area within the fields of bioengineering and bioprocessing;
- They promote participation from researchers, scientists and engineers at all career stages; and
- They involve all sectors such as academia, industry, government agencies and research institutes.
Funds raised by the Division will be used to fund Division activities and pay Division management expenses.
We expect our members to practice science and innovation that is socially desirable and undertaken in the public interest.
Anticipate, Reflect, Engage and Act (AREA)
A Responsible Innovation approach should be one that continuously seeks to: Anticipate, Reflect, Engage, and Act (AREA).
Anticipate
Describing and analysing the impacts, intended or otherwise, (e.g. economic, social, environmental) that might arise. This does not seek to predict but rather to support an exploration of possible impacts and implications that may otherwise remain uncovered and little discussed.
Reflect
Reflecting on the purposes of, motivations for and potential implications of the research, and the associated uncertainties, areas of ignorance, assumptions, framings, questions, dilemmas and social transformations these may bring.
Engage
Opening up such visions, impacts and questioning to broader deliberation, dialogue, engagement and debate in an inclusive way.
Act
Using these processes to influence the direction and trajectory of the research and innovation process itself.
For Responsible Innovation to take place in a meaningful way, it is important that we nurture and promote partnerships between disciplines and facilitate training to enable these skills to be developed and taken forward. We encourage our members to involve integrated approaches and collaborative research involving social and environmental scientists, ethicists and engagement practitioners.
