  • In nature, enzymes catalyse both synthesis and degradation of polymers like cellulose, the most abundant organic polymer on Earth. Polymer Biotechnology takes advantage of both microbial and enzyme based routes for the development of environmentally friendly and highly specific strategies in polymer processing. Apart from well—established bulk applications in our daily life (e.g. detergent or food processing area), efficient bioconversion of polymers is an essential element in the exploitation of renewable energy sources like second generation biofuels or biogas. More recently, enzymes based strategies were implemented both for synthesis, functionalization and recycling of (bio)synthetic polymers. Clearly advances in biotechnology and adaptation of enzymes to non-natural substrates and non—natural reaction environments contributed to these developments with application ranging from materials to the biomedical field. Polymer biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field combining knowledge from many areas like polymer engineering, enzyme technology or bionanotechnology. Consequently, this EFB section aims at bringing together experts from these distinct areas to advance both scientific and industrial development of on Polymer Biotechnology.
