New DivisionEFB Biocatalysis Division
The EFB Biocatalysis Division was established by the EFB General Assembly on 26 June 2020. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schwaneberg (RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany), Jan Marienhagen (Forschungszentrum Jülich, Jülich, Germany, and Dr. María J. Hernaiz (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spain) were appointed as Co- Chairs and Secretary, respectively.
The Division encourages all readers interested in biocatalysis to send proposals of workshops, seminars, position papers or any other related activity to Lucia Gracia( [email protected]). For details, visit the EFB Biocatalysis Division website,

The 1st EFB Biocatalysis Open Day 2020 will be held on 26th of November 2020.
It is an online event consisting of top-notch seminars and flash talks focused on diverse aspects of biocatalysis.
Jens Nielsen will give the Opening Plenary Lecture: Yeast synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.
The closing lecture will be given by Prof. Donald Hilvert: Designing artificial metalloenzyme.
The Biocatalysis Division encourages all researchers, from Masters and PhD students to senior scientists, to participate and to submit their abstracts for oral and poster presentations.
The abstract submission deadline is 15th October 2020.
Registration is free of charge but essential.

Microbial Stress 2020 will be held in virtual format on 16-18 November 2020. You can still register and submit your abstract for oral and poster presentation.
All early career scientists can apply for a FEMS bursary and pay a registration fee of only €20.

On Monday 5th October, there will be a joint EuropaBio – EFB session entitled “Future on biotech innovation: Why does Europe need modern Biotechnology?” at EFIB 2020, the European Forum for Industrial Biotechnology and the Bioeconomy, which will be organised this year as a fully digital conference week. This session has been coordinated by Carsten Hjort (EFB) and Agnes Borg (EuropaBio).
The welcome by the Chair, Aleš Pečincka (Olomouc) will be followed by three lectures:
13.45 – 14.10: Irina Borodina (The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark and CTO, BioPhero ApS): Fermented pheromones – a sustainable solution for plant protection from insect pests
14.10 – 14.35: Rene Custers (VIB): Genome engineering for bio-sustainability: EU regulatory challenges.
14.35 – 15.00: Carsten Hjort (Novozymes): Sustainable solutions from Industrial Biotech.
