The fifth edition of the Applied Synthetic Biology in Europe (ASBE V) conference took place as a fully online event from November 2nd to November 4th.
ASBE V attracted 260 international scientists who shared viewpoints, recent outcomes and cutting-edge technologies in the broad field of synthetic biology.
The 34 oral and 99 poster presentations covered different aspects of synthetic biology, including circuit design and deployment, enabling technologies for utilization of alternative feedstock, and industrial applications.
ASBE V enabled active interactions among participants, cross fertilization of ideas and sharing the vision on future developments.
The diverse background of individual participants as well as the high scientific level of the presentations promoted stimulating discussions and hopefully lead to novel interactions and future collaborations.
Pascale Daran-Lapujade and Pablo I. Nikel, chairs of ASBE V, are very pleased of the success and of the echo of the meeting, and they take the opportunity to thank all the speakers, participants, sponsors and the scientific steering committee members that made all this possible.

Development of a bioeconomy monitoring framework for the European Union: An integrative and collaborative approach
Bioeconomy is not an autonomous sector of the economy, but rather a The EU Bioeconomy Strategy, updated in 2018, in its Action Plan pledges an EU-wide, internationally coherent monitoring system to track economic, environmental and social progress towards a sustainable bioeconomy. This paper presents the approach taken by the European Commission’s (EC) Joint Research Centre (JRC) to develop such a system. To accomplish this, we capitalise on (1) the experiences of existing indicator frameworks; (2) stakeholder knowledge and expectations; and (3) national experiences and expertise. This approach is taken to ensure coherence with other bioeconomy-related European monitoring frameworks, the usefulness for decision-making and consistency with national and international initiatives to monitor the bioeconomy.
