This 4-day conference in the beautiful city of Olomouc will focus on plant physiology and genetics. Topics covered will include the genetics and gene editing of tomato, maize, barley and other cereal crops; plant epigenetics; morphogenetic regulatory networks; drought resistant crops; the role of arbuscular mycorrhiza in plant-microbe interactions; and environmental topics such as nitric oxide emissions from soils and treatment of micropollutants in water and wastewater. There will be many short talks by young plant biotechnologists describing their work on plant products.

EFB Polymer Biotechnology SectionThe 10th European Symposium on Biopolymers will be hosted by the Technical University of Munich campus for biotechnology and sustainability and C.A.R.M.E.N. e.V. in Straubing from September 25 until 27 2019. It will reflect the newest developments in biosynthesis, (bio-)chemical modification, processing, and industrial as well as medical applications of biobased and biodegradable polymers. The scientific program will cover all aspects of biopolymers but will put a focus on the utilization of renewable resources and enabling the exchange between young, well-established researchers and innovative industry to bring novel and sustainable solutions to the market.

EFB Journal New BiotechnologyCertain new plant breeding techniques and their marketability in the context of EU GMO legislation – recent developmentsThe comparatively low adoption rate of GMO products in the European Union (EU) market seems to be connected with the strictness of authorization regulations and inefficiency of the authorization process itself. These problems will apply to any product deemed to be a GMO that could potentially be marketable in the EU. Since modern methods of plant breeding involving oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis (ODMs) or site-directed nucleases (SDNs), including Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR), are becoming ever more popular, it is crucial to establish whether the products of such new breeding techniques (NBTs), in particular those which involve precise methods of mutagenesis, are exempted from the EU legislation on GMOs or not. Legal uncertainty as to their status may result in reluctance to invest in such methods and develop them further.

Cell culture technologies: bridging academia and industry to provide solutions for patients
We are providing an exciting setting for around 1100 participants from industry and academia which will facilitate the outstanding networking and exchange of ideas that the ESACT meetings are so famous for. The meeting will feature excellent scientific presentations, including key notes by Prof. Mathias Uhlen and Prof. Peter Zandstra, engaging and interactive poster sessions, and a social programme designed to promote interactions and networking. The program will take you through the streets, canals and gardens of Copenhagen, and expose you to sessions spanning a range of topics such as new therapeutic products and vaccines, cell engineering, cell-based technologies and therapeutics, process control and engineering, and new downstream technologies.

SCI EventTargeted medicine: new solutions from biotechnology
This conference will consider ground breaking research in biotechnology and the impact of future capabilities and limitations, on the drug industry. One major initiative and the central core of the conference is precision medicines - a concept that seeks to discover/design drugs that begin to allow a more individual approach to disease management.
Several themes will be explored - drugs and discovery (including disease models, gene editing, AI, biopharmaceuticals) and drug synthesis (to cover the biotechnology in small molecule drugs). Speakers from academia and companies will illustrate all these aspects - from the molecular level of proteins and DNA, through genomes and cells, to disease models and management.

Plant Health Undergraduate Summer Studentships 2019
The Royal Society of Biology invites plant health researchers to submit proposals for one of nine available funded studentships for undergraduates to run over the summer of 2019. Funding for the scheme is provided by Defra, BSPP, N8 AgriFood and the David Colegrave Foundation. Proposed research projects must address at least one of the following themes:
Detection or control, Data & modelling, Trade, Host plants, Earth observations, High-risk pests or pathogens, Knowledge exchange, Oak health.
Closes: 26 March 2019
