3D printing: Economical and supply chain independent single-use plasticware for cell culture
by Peter Satzer, Lena Achtleiner
HEK293 cells were used to test printed shake flasks for cell culture applications and their ease of manufacture. Recorded growth curves showed that renewable biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) thermoplastic is an excellent and economical replacement for single-use plastic shake flasks, which have shipment lead times during pandemic situations or other supply chain disruptions of over 6 months.

How Microbiology Started
In a new article, Dr Peter Collins delves into the origins of Microbiology, the Microbiology Society’s founding journal. Originally called the Journal of General Microbiology, it launched in 1947 with the vision of promoting microbiology as a cohesive and diverse scientific discipline.
In 2022, we celebrate 75 years of publishing for the community, tackling global challenges by publishing the latest fundamental and applied research throughout the field.
Dr Collin’s article commemorates this milestone by revisiting the journal’s history, including the influence of WWII on British research, the friendship of Allen and St John-Brooks and the journal’s launch.
