Microbial Stress: From Molecules To Systems

The Microbial Stress: from Molecules to Systems was organised by the Microbial Physiology Section of the European Federation of Biotechnology. A key feature of the meeting was to emphasise the relevance of the microbial physiology presented to the bioprocessing industry. This was reflected by the fact that although most of the presentations on the first day of the meeting were from academia, most speakers in two sessions on days 2 and 3 of the conference were based in biotechnology companies. A second striking feature of the programme was that 17 of the first 20 speakers were from different countries, with excellent participation from Japan, Korea and Central Europe as well as individual attendees from Brazil, China, Pakistan and several other countries rarely represented at national microbiology meetings. The standard of presentations was extremely high and attracted many questions from the audience. In summary, the cross-fertilization between disciplines that was a central aim of the meeting was achieved.

The EFB would like to thank all participants, Eppendorf AG, the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS), the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB), the University of Natural Resources and Life Science of Vienna (BOKU), and the University of Milano-Bicocca; without your support this meeting would not have been such a great success. Congratulations to Michael Sauer, Paola Branduardi, Pete Lund, and their colleagues for the great meeting.
